Rowing is no longer simply a competitive outdoor sport—it’s an easily accessible, full-body workout offered as a class at the SRWC!

Open to students of all fitness and skill levels, the rowing class offers opportunities to learn healthy rowing form, proper ergometer usage and a high intensity exercise. Classified as high intensity interval training (HIIT), the rowing class allows students to compete against themselves for the ultimate workout.

“If you go to the gym, you typically see people on the rowing machines using terrible form,” said rowing class teacher Isaac Da Silva. “In the class, we teach students how to use an erg, or ergometer, properly. We even do workouts that Olympic level rowers do—scaled back to the members’ ability of course.”

Though the class has been open for two months, Da Silva has participated in rowing for several years and is currently on the Varsity rowing team for CSULB.

“Rowing burns more calories than running or swimming,” said Da Silva. “It’s incredibly taxing, but it works. If you want to work out in a motivated group environment as part of a free class, this is a great opportunity.”

The rowing class is open to all fitness levels, and participants will be in an engaging environment with motivating music, interval training and a supportive group of people. Da Silva personally ensures to teach students the fundamentals of rowing and proper form.

The rowing class takes place each Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Pura Vida room.
