For most folks, the Membership Service Desk is their first interaction when entering the Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC). Although it is perceived that the front desk is simply an area to check in, it also contributes to creating a welcoming and supportive space.
Working at the front desk has shown me that we do much more than just check individuals into the facility. As a collaborative team, we seek to answer questions regarding visitor passes, memberships, access to the SRWC including the ability to assist with questions pertaining to another department. By creating a friendly environment for every single person who enters the facility, our members are more willing to communicate with us. Although these interactions may seem small or arbitrary, they create an environment where members can feel comfortable, safe, supported and confident in the resources offered to them.
Building relationships with my coworkers has been incredibly meaningful to me while working at Membership Services. I have created long-lasting memories and connections with members outside of work. One memory that sticks with me is going to Bolsa Chica with my Membership Desk coworkers. By spending time with them outside of the SRWC, I was reminded that this department is about more than providing service, but also about creating real connections and a sense of belonging.
The SRWC is more than just a place to exercise. It is a space where students can build a community, improve their physical and mental well-being, and take a break from daily stress. Membership Services plays a key role in shaping that experience from the moment members walk through the door. Through positive interactions and guidance, we help create an environment that promotes daily wellness and a sense of community. We hope that the same sense of belonging is felt by everyone who enters the SRWC especially because this building thrives because of all of you: our members and guests!
