Ask A Trainer

Being a trainer at the Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC) comes with more benefits than simply training clients. As a trainer, you are given the opportunity to be in a position of leadership and to be seen as a role model to all members, along with the people you train. It is our intention to provide the training team with endless possibilities for professional growth and development as a certified personal trainer, and to help them continue learning and being successful towards their ultimate career goals.

Throughout each semester, we encourage our trainers to host workshops and “Ask a Trainer” booths around the facility as a way for them to expose our members to alternative styles of training and new or unfamiliar equipment. Each month, one of the personal trainers gets an opportunity to be featured in our Rec Report by writing an informative article on a fitness related topic. Whenever possible, we send our trainers to fitness conferences in order for them to broaden their horizons and keep up-to-date on the trends in the fitness industry.

One of the most rewarding things about working as a personal trainer at the SRWC is the networking and peer-to-peer connections that can be created with fellow coworkers. Because all of our trainers have different specialties and training styles, everyone can work together and collaborate to share their varying knowledge and expertise with each other.

Many of our alumni have flourished post-graduation, landing desired full-time jobs because of their experience as a trainer at the SRWC. Some examples include personal training at top-of-the-line fitness facilities, pursuing a Ph.D. while teaching undergraduate courses in the Kinesiology department, and becoming a sports dietician for the U.S. Olympic Committee. Speaking for myself, I know there is no way I would be in the position as Fitness Coordinator at the SRWC without the opportunity I was given to be a personal trainer here while I was a student.
