What do Selena Gomez, Khloé Kardashian and David Beckham have in common? Celebrity status aside, they’re all fans of spinning - the music-driven, cardio-forward workout that has been around for almost 30 years!
There are countless reasons why spinning is so popular, here are some of the top 10:
- Safety
Unlike a road bike, you don’t have to worry about cars. The spin bike has clips on the pedals (spin shoes required) to give you the safest ride possible. Even without specialized shoes, pedal cages help stabilize the feet.
- Fun
You might even forget you are working out. There’s a reason why you’ll often hear hooting and hollering from participants!
- Community
Go with friends or go alone, the spinning community is welcoming to all. And when you work out with people you know, you create more accountability for you and them!
- Music
From techno to pop to hip hop, there’s something for everyone. Ask your instructor to incorporate your favorite song!
- Efficiency
You can burn, on average, 450 to 500 calories in a 45-minute spin class!
- Intervals
Studies prove that interval training is a highly effective approach to exercise. Spinning, by definition, involves intervals (at varying resistances and speeds).
- Inclusivity
Spinning is great for all fitness levels, shapes and sizes. The beauty of biking is that you control your resistance and effort! We even have gel seats for those who need a booty boost!
- Cost
While some spin studios charge up to $30 a class, all spin classes at the Student Recreation & Wellness Center (SRWC) are free! Remember to reserve your seat through the SRWC Go app.
- Access
The SRWC offers seven classes throughout the week to accommodate all schedules.
- Ease
Free from complex choreography, spinning is easy to follow along, with only three hand positions.
