Losing weight can be one of the hardest and most frustrating goals. For some, low carbohydrate (carb) diets are an effective weight loss approach. As the Keto Diet rises in popularity, more and more people choose to restrict their carb intake to achieve their weight loss goals. However, carbs are an important component of your diet! They provide the body with glucose (also known as sugar), which converts to energy that supports bodily functions and physical activity.

In the beginning of low carb diets, you may see quick weight loss because your blood sugar and insulin levels decrease. The decrease in levels minimizes the chance of fat storage in the body. However, cutting carbs out altogether can result in fatigue, weakness, headaches and nausea, which can last from a couple of days to weeks. And, when people cut carbs completely, they crave them more, which can result in binge eating.

If you're thinking about changing your diet for weight loss, don't cut out carbs entirely. Instead, think about improving the types of carbs you consume. For example, complex carbs like brown rice, whole grain bread and vegetables, release energy slowly and keep a person fuller for longer. So, you don’t have to cut carbs, just be more carb conscious.
