The SRWC Combine is back to see who has what it takes to be this year’s “workout warrior” at Long Beach State University (LBSU). Inspired by the National Football League’s (NFL) Scouting Combine, the SRWC Combine will use four tests to gauge the athletic ability of its participants.
This year’s tests are the vertical jump, the broad jump, the bench press and the 5-10-5 shuttle.
- The vertical jump tests lower body power and explosiveness, which is necessary for a variety of sports – especially those involving lots of jumping. Last year’s champion reached a height of 33 inches!
- The broad jump also tests lower body power and explosiveness but focuses more on the performance of posterior chain muscles – muscles located on the back side of the body like the hamstrings and glutes. It is also a great general fitness assessment and gives a broader view of a person’s athletic ability. Last year's champion reached a distance of 8 feet 8.6 inches!
- The bench press assesses upper body strength, specifically pushing strength. In the NFL this is necessary for pushing away from players trying to tackle you, but the movement is also important for any other activity requiring upper body strength. Last year’s champion completed a total of 60 reps on the modified YMCA bench press!
- The 5-10-5 shuttle tests an athlete’s speed and agility. The ability to accelerate and decelerate quickly and repeatedly is important in football to make quick cuts to get past defenders. This challenge is new to the SRWC Combine and will replace the 40-yard dash due to spacing.
We encourage everyone to try these tests and compare their athletic ability to other members. Can you beat last year's competitors? Find out on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the SRWC Main Gym A from 5 to 6:30pm. No registration is required—just show up ready to compete!
