Social media allows people to express themselves online by forming connections, sharing thoughts, feelings and opinions, all while showcasing individuality and creativity. However, with social media playing a big part in almost everyone’s everyday life, it is important to understand its potential impact.
Social media has been proven to have negative effects on both body image and mental health. Most people who post on social media have been conditioned to present themselves in their best light through filters or photoshop, editing and enhancing photos to fit their image more to their liking.
Although harmless and fun when used in moderation, this may become an issue when people forgoe realistic expecations of how their body should look. Comparing normal body types to an “idealized” one plastered all over the internet may leave people unhappy and disastisfied with their own image and looks. Here are some tips and tricks to help you combat a negative self image:
- Remember that everyone’s body is remarkably different! Most of what is presented online may actually be a facade and comparing yourself to others, or to what you see online, is a deceitful rabbit hole that we should all avoid.
- Your body is unique; love and cherish it for the way it works for you!
- Surrounding yourself with a safe and positive network is a sure way to foster a healthy relationship with social media. I recommend following body positive accounts that constantly encourage and uplift and/or unfollowing accounts that post content that could compel you to indulge in unhealthy behaviors.
- Take a break and disengage! Many studies have shown that taking breaks and/or limiting time on social media can help boost your mood and confidence!
