Are you looking for a fun way to cool off at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC)? If so, the SRWC Aquatic Center has just what you’re looking for! Whether it be tanning poolside, unwinding in the hot tub or practicing your swimming skills, safety is the top priority!
Here are the SRWC’s top three main strategies to prevent water emergencies:
Supervision
At the SRWC, student safety is the number one priority. To prevent drownings from occurring, proper supervision is always necessary. Before heading to any aquatics center or swimming area, always verify the presence of an on-duty lifeguard – especially before entering the water. Lifeguards play a key role in monitoring your safety and providing assistance when needed, helping prevent emergencies. Adhering to established rules is vital for the safety and enjoyment of all.
Water Competency
While taking a dip in the pool can be fun, it’s important to know your limits. For your safety, being aware of your aquatic skills is necessary. Prioritizing your safety involves a clear understanding of your aquatic skills. If you're uncertain about your swimming abilities, we recommend staying in shallow water. The deep end, identified by the long, blue "break line" spanning the lap lane width, should be approached cautiously. It is encouraged that swimmers practice outside of the lap lanes unless supervised by a licensed swim instructor. In addition, being aware of facility rules is also beneficial in preventing aquatic emergencies.
Taking Care of Your Body
Taking care of yourself is crucial, especially in outdoor settings. Applying sunscreen, staying hydrated and listening to your body’s needs are vital in maintaining your safety. As summer approaches, staying hydrated and well-nourished will keep your body happy, healthy and ready for your time at the pool!
Visiting the Aquatic Center this semester is a fun and exciting way to spend your time at the SRWC. And by staying prepared and knowledgeable, you can keep yourself and those around you safe from potential water emergencies! Go Beach!
